How Can We Treat ADHD?

  • Support with Medication Management.

Generally, only an MD or nurse can order ADHD medication. However, I can collaborate with you and your prescriber to support the work your meds are doing. It is a personal choice (between you, your doctor, and possibly your family) whether or not you choose to use medication.

Studies have found that CBT can further reduce ADHD symptoms for those taking medication, as well as improve symptoms for those who choose not to use meds.

Our focus will be on skills building, which medication can’t teach!

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).

Per the American Psychological Association (APA), CBT is based on the following principals:

Psychological problems are based, in part, on faulty or unhelpful ways of thinking.

Psychological problems are based, in part, on learned patterns of unhelpful behavior.

People suffering from psychological problems can learn better ways of coping with them, thereby relieving their symptoms and becoming more effective in their lives.

Some techniques used in CBT for ADHD include: improving sleep hygiene, social media/tech use, diet, completing weekly planning sessions, assessing executive strengths and weaknesses, and using top-down strategies for self regulation (mindfulness, breathing exercises, progressive muscle relaxation).

  • Coaching and Skills Building.

Our process will involve working collaboratively, because I believe you are the expert on your life!

First, we will assess your executive skills, and will make long and short-term goals you’d like to achieve. We’ll identify obstacles and how to overcome them, including using environmental modifications (such as creating visual reminders or breaking tasks into smaller pieces). We’ll also work together to enhance your strengths/identified executive skills.

Some examples of executive skills include: time management, flexibility, working memory, and task initiation.
